The Music Education program offers degrees at the following levels:
Bachelor of Music Education (BME) -- Instrumental, Choral, or General
Master of Music Education (MME)
Doctorate (Ph.D. in Music Education)
One certificate program is also offered:
Certificate in Special Music Education

Bachelor of Music in Music Education
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education degree -- Choral, Instrumental, or General -- are required by the State of Florida to meet the following requirements on entry to a teacher certification program:

1. SAT score of 950 or better or an Enhanced ACT score of 20 or better.
2. Grades of "C" or better in all Freshman English and Basic Mathematics courses.
3. Additional requirements as stipulated by each department.

All undergraduate teacher education programs in the College of Education, in addition to undergraduate teacher education programs in Art Education (School of Visual Arts and Dance), Music Education (School of Music), and Interdisciplinary Science (College of Arts and Sciences), require a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for entrance into their programs.

Florida State University is committed to increasing the proportion of teacher candidates who have been historically underrepresented among Florida's public school teachers. Applicants representing such groups will be considered for exceptions to the general admissions criteria.

Each applicant to the School of Music is required to perform an admission audition in applied music. To be admitted to the School of Music, applicants must meet minimum standards in applied music through the placement audition.

Following admission to the School of Music, students may pursue courses in the following curriculum as prerequisites to admission to Music Education Professional Sequence courses.

Applied Music: Principal Instrument 12 semester hours

Professional Sequence Information:
Application for Professional Sequence must be made at the conclusion of 45 hours of course work. Transfers may be admitted on a provisional basis at discretion of the Music Education faculty. Students may not enroll in Professional Sequence courses prior to admission to Professional Sequence which requires: (1) cumulative GPA of 2.5, (2) Music GPA of 3.0, (3) MUE 2040, (4) 840 SAT or 20 ACT, (5) Minimum grade of "C" in Math and English, (6) Completion of the first semester of the second year level (MV_ 2321-2326) of the Applied sequence and (7) Satisfactory evaluations form Music Education, Applied, Theory, Class Voice/Piano/Guitar and Ensemble faculties.
