The
Keyboard Area of the School of Music rose to national
and international prominence during the eleven-year tenure
of the distinguished Hungarian pianist and composer Ernst
von Dohnányi, after whom Dohnányi Recital
Hall is named, and the two decades of his famous protegé,
American pianist Edward Kilenyi. Many outstanding pianists
have graduated from FSU, a large number of whom hold college
and university positions across the country and abroad.
Piano
and organ performance degree programs are offered on
all levels, freshman through doctoral; degrees in accompanying/collaborative
piano are available to graduate students; and the piano
pedagogy major is offered for undergraduate and master’s
students. In addition, piano is the primary instrument
of a large number of students majoring in other areas
of music. The well-rounded curriculum includes duo piano,
harpsichord, fortepiano, comprehensive piano literature
classes, piano technology, piano pedagogy, accompanying
classes, and a complete series of organ courses from
hymnology to design and maintenance.
