Hugo Wolf Centennial Song Festival
To commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Austrian composer Hugo Wolf’s death,
members of the Florida State University School of Music
faculty will present a weekend-long festival of his
songs October 17th-18th, 2003. Universally admired for
their charm, humor, sophistication and high musical
quality, the songs of Hugo Wolf are the ultimate expression
of 19th-century German Romanticism. Throughout his brief
life (Wolf died in 1903 at the age of 42), the composer
would immerse himself in the writings of a particular
poet and compose his songs in sudden, concentrated bursts
of inspiration, frequently writing two or more songs
in a single day. Wolf wrote over one hundred and seventy
miniature masterpieces of song between 1888 and 1891,
followed by a brief resurgence of inspiration in March
and April of 1897, when he composed an additional 24
songs for the Italienisches Liederbuch.

Ben
Verdery, guitar
Benjamin Verdery has been described by Guitar Review
Magazine as “An American original; an American
master.” A pioneer of new music, he has been long
established as one of the finest guitarists of his generations.
His performances never fail to include a unique program
(literally from Bach to rock), along with a few jokes
and breath-taking acrobatics, all of which are delivered
by a profoundly sensitive musician and virtuoso guitarist.
As a performer, Benjamin Verdery has performed in many
countries, including the International Guitar Festival
in Havana, Cuba; Festival International de Agosto, Caracas,
Venezuela; Theatre Carré in Amsterdam; Chichester
Cathedral, England; Bad Urach Schubert Festival in Germany;
the 92nd Street Y, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center and the Metropolitan Opera, New York and the
Ambassador Theater in Los Angeles. He has recorded and
performed with such diverse artists as Frederic Hand,
Leo Kottke, Anthony Newman, Jessye Norman, Paco Peña,
Hermann Prey and John Williams. He regularly performs
and records with the Schmidt/Verdery Flute & Guitar
Duo (Rie Schmidt, flutes), with Bill & Ben (with
Celtic guitarist William Coulter) and with his ensemble
Ufonia.

Bruce
Dickey, cornet
Bruce Dickey can be heard on more than five dozen recordings.
His solo recording ("Quel lascivissimo cornetto...
") on Accent with the ensemble Tragicomedia was
awarded the prestigious Diapason d'or. In addition to
performing, Bruce Dickey is much in demand as a teacher,
both of the cornetto and of seventeenth-century performance
practice. In addition to his regular class at the Schola
Cantorum he has taught at the Royal Conservatory in
The Hague, the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, and the
Early Music Institute at Indiana University as well
as master classes in the United States, Canada, Europe
and Japan. He is also active in research on performance
practice, and has published, together with Michael Collver,
a catalog of the surviving cornetto repertoire. In 2000
the Historic Brass Society bestowed on him the prestigious
Christopher Monk Award for "his monumental work
in cornetto performance, historical performance practice
and musicological scholarship".

Capella
Artemisia
"Songs of the Cloisters: Music by and for Italian
Nuns of the 17th Century"
Cappella Artemisia, founded in 1991, is an all-women
vocal ensemble from Bologna, Italy, and consists of
a core of 8-10 singers with continuo. The women singers
who make up Cappella Artemisia come from a variety of
musical backgrounds, (classical, operatic, folk, pop...)
but are united by their love for the early repertoire,
while the instrumentalists are all established performers
in the field of early music. Since its inception more
than ten years ago, Cappella Artemisia has received
critical and popular praise, both for the rarity and
originality of its repertoire, and for the high quality
of its performances.
