TIMOTHY
HOEKMAN, Professor of Coaching and Accompanying,
has extensive experience as a performer,
teacher, and coach. He has performed as
soloist and accompanist in the U.S., Canada,
Australia, and Europe. Since 1988, Hoekman
has been spending his summers in Cooperstown,
NY, serving as pianist, harpsichordist,
vocal coach, assistant conductor, and music
administrator for Glimmerglass Opera. He
was the artistic director of the South Georgia
Opera Company from its inception in 1986
until 1993. He has also served as coach
and/or accompanist for Florida Grand Opera,
Des Moines Metro Opera, Michigan Opera Theater,
Opera Grand Rapids, and the Peter Harrower
Summer Opera Workshop in Atlanta.
Hoekman
earned the D.M.A. degree in piano performance
from the University of Michigan, where he
studied with Theodore Lettvin and Eugene
Bossart. He received his B.A. degree from
Calvin College and the M. M. from Peabody
Conservatory, where he was a student of
Leon Fleisher. Dr. Hoekman has written for
the National Association of Teachers of
Singing Journal. His song cycles The Nash
Menagerie, American Lyrics, and Seven Housman
Songs have been published by Recital Publications,
and he was named the 2002 MTNA Shepherd
Distinguished Composer of the Year for his
song cycle To Make a Prairie.
