African Music and Dance |
|
The West African Music Ensemble includes instruction
in West African Ashanti drumming, as well as vocal
and dance styles from Ghana. The School of Music
owns a set of Ashanti drums, bells and rattles and
a Ga xylophone, fiddle, and other traditional instruments.

African-American
Gospel Choir |

The vocal ensemble (with occasional instruments)
specializes in the performance of music from the
African-American tradition.
|

Andean
Music |
|
Known
as "Aconcagua," after the tallest mountain
in the Andes (and in the Western Hemisphere), this
ensemble performs music from the many traditions
of the South American central Andes (Chile, Argentina,
Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador). The instrumentation
includes kenas, sikus, tarkas, charangos, guitars,
arpa índigena, bombo, and cajon.

Balinese
Gamelan |
|
"Sekaa
Gong Hanuman Agung" performs both traditional
and contemporary gamelan music of Bali, as well
as music pieces for gamelan by Western composers.
Focusing on both gong kebyar and baleganjur gamelan
styles, this ensemble features 25-30 musicians playing
on a spectacular set of handmade gongs, matellophones,
drums, cymbals, and flutes from Bali, Indonesia.

A workshop ambience led by artist-in-residence Charles
Atkins provides the opportunity for both vocalists
and instrumental participants to learn basic techniques
of performing blues and related musics derived from
blues.

Brazilian

"Samba Oba" performs various types of
Brazilian music, including batucada drumming, escola
de samba singing, MPB (popular music), choros, and
more. Singers, percussionists, guitarists, and other
musicians can learn to perform Brazilian music from
carnaval to capoeira.

Chinese

The
Chinese Music Ensemble includes instruction and
performance on various Chinese instruments. The
School of Music owns assorted numbers of the following:
p'i-p'a, ch'in, cheng, er-hu, luan, ti, yang chin,
sheng, sona, hsiao, and percussion.

Sitar
and tabla are taught by master Nalini Vinayak, artist-in-residence.
The School of Music provides 10 sitars and 12 tablas.

Jane Scott teaches authentic Irish fiddle styles
in a traditional oral-aural manner.

Italian
Ensemble |
|
One
of the newest additions to the School of Music's
World Music Program is the Italian Music Ensemble.
The ensemble explores Italy's diverse musical traditions,
including the tarantellas of Calabria, the stornelli
of Puglia, the canzune of Sicily, and the
ballu of Sardinia. Members of the ensemble
participate in L'Orchestra Italiana, a professional
group that often performs Neapolitan folk songs
at local events. Both ensembles feature traditional
Italian instruments such as the accordion, mandolin,
and various percussion instruments.

Ensemble |

The
FSU Korean Ensemble features up to 20 musicians
performing various styles of Korean traditional
music and its modern derivatives, ranging from the
intimate zither solo, kayagum sanjo, to the rousing
farmers' percussion band music, p'ungmul and samil-nori.

New
World Music |
|
The
New World Music Ensemble is dedicated to a multicultural
approach to contemporary music employing instruments
from around the world in addition to European instruments.
It frequently performs compositions that are influenced
by non-western music, emphasizing (but not limited
to) performance choice and improvisation.

Salsa |
|
"Salsa
Florida" includes instrumentalists and vocalists
interested in commercial and popular Latin music
with special emphasis on the genre of salsa. The
ensemble plays on and off campus for a number of
events each year and has appeared recently for state,
regional, and national meetings of professional
musical organizations.

Steelband |
|
"Mas
'n Steel," a Trinidadian-styled steelband,
consists of "pans" made by Manette, Alexis
and Reynolds. The ensemble includes instruction
in the instruments, and performances throughout
Florida are a part of its activities. |
