PETER
SPENCER, Professor of Theory, earned the
B.M., M.M., and D.M.A. degrees in composition
from West Virginia University. Since his
arrival at The Florida State University
in 1971, his energies have largely been
spent in theory and, more recently, in computer
applications in music.
His
books, The Practice of Harmony
(4th ed., Prentice Hall, 2000), and The
Study of Form in Music (with Peter
Temko, Prentice Hall, 1988), are used in
the basic theory program. In addition, non-music
majors taking the course in introductory
music theory use his latest book, Music
Theory for Non-Music Majors (2nd ed.,
Prentice Hall, 2000). He has also written,
and continues to write, instructional materials
for the development of aural skills, his
latest project being a comprehensive computer-based
program in melodic and harmonic dictation.
Dr.
Spencer is director of the Certificate Programs
for Pedagogy in Music Theory and Computers
in Music, and teaches graduate courses in
theory pedagogy and fugue.
