MATTHEW
R. SHAFTEL, Assistant Professor of Music
Theory, received Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees
from Yale University, where he won the prestigious
Undergraduate Teaching Prize. He holds a
B.A. degree in Music and Education, also
from Yale University.
Prior
to his arrival at Florida State University,
Dr. Shaftel taught courses on harmony, counterpoint,
form, opera, post-tonal analysis, critical
writing, and music history at Yale University
and at Southern Connecticut State University.
His research and publications reflect an
interest in nineteenth- and twentieth-century
art song as well as early-American and European
popular music. Dr. Shaftel is currently
preparing an edition of Anton Webern's early
songs (1899-1908), based on archival work
that he has done at the Paul Sacher Stiftung
in Basel, Switzerland.
