FRANK
GUNDERSON, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology,
received a B.A. from the Evergreen State
College (WA), an M.A. in World Music at
Wesleyan University , and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology
from Wesleyan University (CT). He has taught
at Ohio University, the University of Michigan
and the University of Oklahoma, and has
also taught in a secondary school in Kenya.
He has conducted extensive fieldwork in
Tanzania, and has produced the CD "Tanzania:
Farmer Composers of North West Tanzania
"(1997, Multicultural Media).
Gunderson
is an active member of the Society for Ethnomusicology,
the College Music Society, and the African
Studies Association. He has published articles
and reviews in Ethnomusicology
and Africa Today, is a recent guest
editor of the journal The World of Music,
and co-edited the book Mashindano!:
Competitive Music Performance in East Africa
(2000, Mkukina Nyota Press/African Books
Collective LTD). He is currently writing
a book about musical labor practices in
northwestern Tanzania.
