Graduate Audition Requirements
If you are unable to attend any of the listed audition dates, you may be able to schedule a different date by contacting the School of Music Admissions Office directly (850/644-6102). These other auditions usually occur on weekday afternoons.

Accompanists are provided for on-campus Voice auditions only
and are neither provided nor necessary for any other auditions.

Tapes: If you do not give a live audition you must submit a high quality audio cassette recording (NOT video), free of distortion and added reverberation. Audio tapes should reflect the requirements for your instrument/voice as listed and should be clearly labeled with your name, instrument/voice, and tape contents. Taped auditions must be sent to the School of Music and not to the Office of Admissions or to the individual faculty members. TAPED AUDITIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL YOUR APPLICATION IS COMPLETE.

Conducting Applicants Oonly (Band, Orchestral and Choral) need to submit an audio tape of a group that you conduct and a video tape (US-VHS format) of a twenty-minute rehearsal. Choral applicants will be evaluated on the basis of those tapes. Qualified instrumental conducting applicants may be asked to give a live audition at a later date. All conducting applicants need to audition on their major instrument/voice as per the above requirements.

Supporting Materials: Part of your application includes the submission of a comprehensive repertoire list, with performed works identified by an asterisk (*), your resume, and copies of recital programs representative of your solo or small ensemble work. The repertoire list should also include works that you have rehearsed and/or studied, even if you did not perform them in public recitals, as the faculty needs to ascertain the extent of your knowledge of and experience with the repertoire for your instrument/voice. Your resume should reflect your former teachers and dates of study with each.

Brass: Perform two works of contrasting styles and tempos. Play selected scales/studies upon request. You may audition with or without accompaniment; however, accompanists will not be provided for live auditions.

Guitar: 1.) Movement or movements from a major work by J.S. Bach: Cello Suites, Lute Suites, Violin sonatas and Partitas. 2.) A piece or movement of a major guitar composer – Ponce, Rodrigo, Tedesco, Villa-Lobos; or modern works – Britten, Henz, etc. 3.) Extensive background of study.

Jazz: NOTE: Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Acoustic Bass, Piano, and Percussion only. Perform selections in three different styles (ballad, swing, etc.). Acoustic Bass applicants should plan to bring their own amplifier. Percussionists should perform one selection each for timpani, keyboard, and snare/multiple percussion/drumset. Please clarify if you are giving a jazz audition on your application form.

Percussion: Demonstrate proficiency in: (1) snare drum/multiple percussion or snare/drumset; (2) keyboard percussion; (3) timpani. You are strongly encouraged to audition on campus.

Piano: Artist Certificate in Performance

Piano: Performance majors: Perform from memory three contrasting pieces selected from three of the following categories: J. S. Bach; one movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven; a Romantic work; a twentieth-century work. Non-performance majors: Perform from memory two works; at least one must be a work by J. S. Bach or a sonata movement by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven.

Piano Accompanying: In addition to the above performance-level audition, Piano Accompanying Applicants must also perform an accompanying audition. Please submit a list of accompanying repertoire well in advance of your audition. The Accompanying Faculty will select works they would like to hear during your audition. Applicants will also be asked to sightread.

Piano Pedagogy: Piano Pedagogy Applicants audition as a performance major (described above - 3 memorized selections).

Piano: Special Requirements for MM Opera Coaching

Organ / Harpsichord: three works of contrasting style and tempi. Non-performance majors will perform two works. You are strongly encouraged to audition on campus.

STRINGS (Violin, Viola and Cello): Artist Certificate in Performance

Strings: Perform two works in contrasting styles and tempi. Play selected scales/studies upon request. You may audition with or without accompaniment; however, accompanists will not be provided for live auditions.

Voice - Non-Performance Degrees: Three memorized songs including two art songs representing at least one foreign language and one aria from either oratorio or opera. At least one selection must be in English. NOTE: A non-performance applicant may choose not to audition, in which case she/he is required to take at least two full semesters of principal-level graduate voice study in lieu of an audition. This study should begin in the first semester of residence.

Voice Performance: MM Degree: Six (6) memorized selections including one aria or art song from the Baroque or Classic eras, one Romantic or twentieth-century aria in the original language, plus four more art songs (or three songs and one aria) representing different styles and periods. In addition to English, at least two foreign languages must be chosen from Italian, French, and German. Latin may not substitute for Italian. Other languages may be used in addition.

Voice Performance: DM Degree, as above for MM Voice Performance, except seven (7) selections are required and one selection each is to be in English, French, German and Italian. One (1) Romantic aria AND one (1) twentieth-century aria or song are required.

Additional Auditions for Voice Performance Degrees: Singers applying to the MM program in Opera will audition for the MM in Voice and must complete an additional audition for the Opera program after a semester of study at Florida State. There are also separate auditions, once a student is enrolled, for the DM diagnostic examination, the Artist Certificate, and MM Recital Coaching.

Woodwinds: Perform two works of contrasting styles and tempos. Play selected scales/studies upon request. You may audition with or without accompaniment; however, accompanists will not be provided for live auditions.
